31 Days of ASCP, Day 12… Emperor’s Silk

We will both admit that when we first popped open a can of Emperor’s Silk we were not fans.  We bought it to try to make orange {as we desperately wait for the arrival of Barcelona Orange!} and played around by mixing it with Arles.  The result was a funky “flesh” color.  We gave up and cast our can aside for a bit.  But then, we discovered that if you dark waxed Emperor’s Silk without clear waxing first you get an amazing deep red!
We gave this table base more of an asian flare with the ES and the Dark Wax
The table is ready to be reunited with it’s top!
This little table caught my eye as I was on my way to my son’s baseball game.  I pulled over and paid $5 to a precious old lady in a short pink bathrobe!
Two coats of Emperor’s Silk and one coat of Dark Wax and she was a brand new table!  If I wanted it even darker I could have added a second coat of dark wax.
Red chairs are FUN!  I have a whole new appreciation for the color red now!
If you have not used Emperor’s Silk yet… are you going to now?
Play with it and HAVE FUN!!

    Hey Girls,

I just used ES on a metal thrift store lamp…OMGOSH!!!!

You are so right…open the can and you get a little scared, but dark wax the piece and you are on your knees in praise!!!

    Great post.

Great info! I’m painting an end table for a friend and she wants red! We went to my local mini-stockist and debated between ES or the Primer Red. Decided the PR was too brown so we got the ES thinking I could add a little black. I neither thought to dark wax without clear wax 1st. great idea, thanks. Loving your series!!!!
PS have you tried adding black to the ES?

I have been in love with Emperor’s Silk since the first time I opened a can back in July. The pure red is just so beautiful. The first objects I painted were 2 metal tables. I accented with Arles and used clear and dark wax. Even though that was several months ago those tables are 2 of my favorite pieces to date.

    Once again great minds…
