IMG_2879Poor little Asher is always standing around wondering “what the heck is going on now?”.

If you recall I signed up for Nester’s Cozy Minimalist online decorating class! I’m focusing on my Master Bedroom!

I cannot reveal all the going’s on in the class out of total respect to Myquillyn, aka Nester…but I will say it has been FABULOUS….and I stripped down my Master Bedroom of ALL decor to start!

Hueology Kitchens…Before and After

cottkitchencollageHere is a look at our latest kitchen makeover!

Our client had previously had her builder grade oak cabinets painted and glazed very dark quite a few years ago.  The island was also painted black.

cottkitchenbefore2cottkitchenbefore1cottkitchenbefore3We used Old White Chalk Paint® on the perimeter cabinets and added some dark brown glaze.  The island was done with Chateau Grey Chalk Paint® with Old White highlights and dark brown glaze.  The silver brush nickel knobs were replaced with oil rubbed bronze handles and pulls! It is amazing how lighter and brighter the kitchen became!

I’m a Cozy Minimalist….and you can be too!

Anyone recognize this Decorating Diva?

She is Myquillyn Smith, mostly known as The Nester!  I’m going to be honest here peeps…she has had a ginormous impact on how I decorate for quite a long time…and I’m sure many of you too!  I’d like to tell you little bit of the how and why…because it is a pretty good story…

It was about 2008 ish, and I had a friend of mine make me some drapes for my dining room.  She was over at my house and asked me if I knew about “The Nester”?.  I was like, “Who? The What? What is a Nester?”.  Well she told me to go read this girls blog from our town (Greensboro, NC) called Nesting Place.  I was hooked on this chick immediately!!!  She was so real and was doing such amazing home transformations on a zero budget!  I was a stay at home mom too and loved decorating.  I checked her blog everyday, and hung on every super cool word she typed!  At that time I was making some extra money on the side making and selling cookie dough.  At that time Myquillyn was creating and selling these amazing tassels, as well as her fabulous blog.  Long story short we got to meet through cookie dough and tassels….and our paths have crossed a few time through the years.

Her tagline “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful” has been so freeing!!!  It have given me and so many others the courage to try so many things we may not have ever done because the fear of perfectionism.  My mother kept a perfect house.  I do not. I never will, or do I desire too.  It is such a freeing revelation! Go with it! Own it! Rock it!

Nester bought her house that she lives in now just about the same time we bought this one…end of 2013…so I have been closely following her journey to turn her home into her dream home…but a cozy dream home.  Just as I am doing to this one.  So, when I heard she was doing an online coaching class called the Cozy Minimalist, which concludes at her very own home’s barn…I WAS IN!!

cozy-min-headerWho wants to join me in the venture?  It starts March 26!

Check out the Cozy Minimalist website to find out more about Nester and this great opportunity to join me in that includes the following:

  • Four live weekly coaching webinars featuring photos selected from Cozy Minimalist class attendees
  • Access to a private Facebook group where we can encourage each other
  • Weekly challenges to post and share about the progress of your room
  • That happy feeling you get when a space in your home starts to look more like what you’ve always imagined

I’m still trying to decide which room I am going to focus on….but I hope you follow along with me and the others joining in this venture.  You can mostly follow me on Instagram.  I tend to post the most there.

Please comment and let me know if you decide to partake in this journey so we can stay super connected through it!!!

The Studio is OPEN!

studioafter4Come on in and take a look!  The studio is open and has already hosted 2 events!!!

studioafter2Welcome to the entry…and the “wash up” station!

I found this triple bar sink at an Antique Mall and paid $195 for it…I contemplated trying to do the plumbing myself.  I even watched a few You Tube videos, etc.  Something did not feel right about it and I ended up calling a plumber…pretty glad I did…it ended up actually being a complicated install, and the most expensive part of the studio.  If you look closely you can see that I had to raise the sink height to accommodate the new trap.  I bought some decorative wooden legs for $5.00 each at Home Depot and painted them to match the stainless steel!  I also purchased from Home Depot some faux tin panels to fashion the sink back splash. Just glued them right to the wall…super easy!  Now I have the perfect station for washing brushes, stencils and hands!!

studioafterI love my office nook!

studioafter3I spray painted an old brass chandelier with oil rubbed bronze spray paint, hung it, and then stapled draped burlap for the “ceiling”.  I painted the floor with Graphite Chalk Paint®, stenciled it using the Large Moorish Trellis Stencil from Royal Design Studio, and Old White Chalk Paint®.  I sealed the floor with Annie Sloan Lacquer.

I scored the rusty base of the desk from one of my favorite places, Shoppes on Patterson, in Greensboro, NC, and the perfect barn door from Simply Janelle Designs in Summerfield, NC.

This space is perfect for meeting with clients, and looking over sample boards!

DIY Coat Rack

coatrackOne thing that we don’t have in this house is a coat closet and a very small entryway.  I was looking for a solution for hanging coats and dog leashes by the front door.  Of course the first place I looked was Pinterest!

I fell in love with this idea!

It didn’t exactly happen overnight.  I did not just have a fabulous chippy column just laying around and an affordable one did not just land in my lap overnight.  I put the word out “on the street” that I was looking for one.  About 6 months or so went by.  I kinda forgot about my column quest.  Until….one of my picking friends {Trish from The Shooters Wife} was picking and came across one.  I scooped it up from her before anyone else could!

I then passed it off to another friend {Janelle from Simply Janelle Designs} who added the base stand made from an old barn floor.

What did I do?  I carried into my house and I attached the hooks! I’m thinking I need a fabulous mirror like the the Pinterest picture has too!

Do you think I should paint the base??  Maybe Duck Egg Blue?

Closing out the year….

2015treeDid December happen??

I think it did?  I started out the month doing a kitchen cabinet job….completed a few custom jobs, somehow got my house decorated baking done, and all my shopping by December 25th!

December 26th I started working on the basement studio!!! Finally, after living in this house for a year I’m ready to turn it into a REAL life, open to the public, working studio!!!  I’m GIDDY!!!

studiobeforeThis photo was taken on August 4th, 2013…that is me standing in the workshop area of the basement on the day we first came to look at this house!  The day I started dreaming of having my very own heated and air conditioned workspace.  I had officially outgrown working in our 2 car garage year round.

In the past year I have done TONS of custom projects down here and this space has enabled my business to grow more than I could have imagined.  I’ve been very blessed this past year!

I’m closing out the last few weeks of 2014 working diligently to prepare this space to open up to meet with clients, work on projects and host Studio Nights and other events for YOU!  My goal is to provide you with a creative space to come and be inspired in and work on your own projects and share with others….or just hang out and drink wine!

2015 will also be dedicated to Kitchens.  I will be hosting monthly workshops for those of you who want to paint your own kitchen cabinets.  I will also be doing one kitchen a month for clients and will feature these monthly on the blog!

I’ve also been asked by the folks at Urban Compass to participate in a blogger project called Starter Stories.  Urban Compass is a super cool new website designed to connect those looking for NYC Apartments to their perfect place and neighborhood based on their personality.  I like the concept because your personality really does determine the dwelling and location of your dwelling that is right for you….whether it be in NYC or in the middle of a corn field!

Phew…that is a lot going on for 2015…but I’m ready!!  I leave you with a sneak peak of some things going on in the official Hueology Studio

Amazing how much just plain old paint can change EVERYTHING!!

Before and After Dining Room

meredith1Who doesn’t love a good Before and After Makeover??

My latest client wanted a fresh makeover in her dining room.  She has an awesome, Made in America (Whoot Whoot!) American Drew Dining Set.  Great quality, great lines….but with the dark cherry shine and the brassy pulls….and out dated rugs and fabric she was ready for a change!

meredith10It would have been a shame to get rid of such a good dining set when it is so easy to update it with paint.  We decided on Annie Sloan’s Old Ochre, distressed with Clear Wax.

meredith7I even painted right over the mirrors in the back of the china hutch!

meredith9Asher and Lanie love to pose in my pictures!

Pretty distressed curves on the chairs!

meredith5I painted over the brass handles with Old Ochre, Clear Waxed them and then rubbed on some Royal Design Studio Stencil Creme is Bronze Age and rubbed some back off with some more Clear Wax.

meredith2We wanted to bring a little color into the neutral palette on this small buffet piece.  I used Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg, with Old Ochre accents and Clear and Dark Wax.

I love layering color!

What a great transformation!!!

Coming Soon – Studio Nights!

I’m super excited to open my home studio in

January 2015!

For the last year I have gotten so many requests for classes in which you bring a small piece of furniture or decorative accessory to make over.  I used to teach this class at Total Bliss…and it was a huge success.  So, why did I stop???

Space Issues

Simply put, there is just not enough space in the Total Bliss shop to successfully host this class.  Beginning in January 2015, I am going to open up my home studio for guests to come and use my paints, waxes, brushes, stencils, etc for you to repurpose a small item!

I’m working on pricing and a schedule…but stay tuned to my blog and Facebook and I’ll keep you informed!
